Have you ever wondered what chapter book to recommend to your child? Are your kids coming home from the library with a bag full of books, and you have no clue whether or not they are quality books? I’ve been there with all three of my kids, and that’s why I created this book list of over 100 recommended chapter books. Many books on this list I’ve read with my kids or have used when I taught public school. When my kids are getting ready to go to the library, I tell them to grab their Reading Ring and start picking out a book that looks interesting to them. So, take the guess work out of trying to find a good book to slip into your child’s library bag. Just check out this list of 100+ titles!

WHAT AGE IS THIS RECOMMENDED FOR?
The short answer to that question is PreK+.
The longer answer is that any child who is old enough to sit and listen to a chapter book being read aloud (or read it themselves) would benefit from this list. My children have listened to me read-aloud (or an audiobook) many titles on this list from an early age, even as young as 3 or 4. These are chapter books, not picture books, so you can gauge whether or not your child is ready for such a list. I will say that many children (even as young as PreK) will find delight in listening to some of the shorter chapter books on this list. There are also longer, harder books listed for middle school children (and beyond!). Your child can benefit from this list for years to come!

WHAT’S INCLUDED:
–a picture of the front cover of each book
–a short description of the book
–a label, if applicable: Award Winner, Part of a Series, etc.
–room to hole-punch the upper right corner, if you decide to use a metal ring

HOW TO USE:

[OPTION 1]

  • Print out the pages. You may print as many copies as your family needs.
  • Put them into a folder or staple them together.
  • Take the pages to the library, and cross off the books after they are read!

[OPTION 2]

  • Print out the pages (cardstock or lamination is recommended for added durability).
  • Cut along the black lines, and use a hole punch to punch out the upper right corner of each box.
  • Hook two metal rings together (or use pieces of yarn, ribbon, etc.), and slip the green “Books To Read” card onto one ring and the blue “Books I’ve Read” onto the other ring.
  • Read through the book cards and place them onto the appropriate ring. You can even add your library card to the ring.
  • Take your ring with you the next time you go to the library, and switch the books from one ring to the other as you read them!
